Why we make home videos and take photos...

Story posted: April 20, 2010 by Website Admin

I really loved this article by David Pogue at NY Times:

Who cares about preserving your life for future generations? Your kids might care when they reach a certain age, but your grandkids? Their kids? They won’t have any interest in sitting through videos of your mundane, quaint life. You’ll be dead, and all those videos, and all the effort you put into them, will be so much wasted time. Someone will find them in a shoebox and toss the whole thing into the Dumpster, and that’ll be it.

Well.

I have to admit that I’ve thought a lot about those two arguments. For a while, they’ve made me question my dedication to this home-movie thing.

But recently, something happened that convinced me that those readers are wrong.

In a panic about the disappearing MiniDV format, I’ve spent the last eight months transferring all my tapes onto a 2-terabyte hard drive I bought for the purpose. (I’ll be writing a column about this experience, but basically, I’m just using iMovie. It has an auto-import feature that rewinds each tape, plays it to the end and rewinds it again. I sit in my office, changing tapes once an hour while I do other work.)

And what I discovered has nothing to do with technology, and everything to do with emotion, family and memory.

I’m telling you, these tapes are INCREDIBLE. My wife and children wander up to my attic office, spot whatever movie is currently importing, and they’re just goggle-eyed. We’d completely forgotten what we used to look like, how we used to talk. Our lives are so full, we barely recognize some of the places we’ve been and the experiences we’ve had.

"View And Choose" Trial Offer

Story posted: September 4, 2009 by Website Admin

Viewing slides to decide which ones are worth saving and which ones are not is a huge chore. In the best case scenario, your slides are in carousels, you have a projector handy, and it just takes some time to go through them. In the worst case scenario your slides are in boxes or bundles, you don't have a projector and nothing is labeled.

On the other hand, viewing and sorting through digital files is as easy as can be. With this in mind, Slides in a Flash is happy to announce that for a limited time we will be offering a trial of our new "View and Choose" service. Send us as many slides as you want, preview them online, discard up to half, and only pay for the photos you wish to keep.

Contact us with any questions, and be sure to mention this offer when you send your order.

Slide Samples: Living the Dream Divers

I enjoy processing slides for people, but it isn't every day that a batch like these comes along. I'm so happy that the folks at Living The Dream Divers in the Cayman Islands allowed me to share their gorgeous underwater photography.
